Cromer Tennis & Squash Club welcomed 6 Ladies county teams for the LTA Summer County Cup tournament: Buckinghamshire, East of Scotland, Essex, Lancashire, North Wales & Sussex. After a week of excellent closely fought matches, Buckinghamshire emerged as the eventual winners. John Bruley was the tournament referee assisted by Heather Bottomley (Norfolk Representative on LTA Council as court supervisor.
The weather meant some of the play was on the newly resurfaced artificial grass which dried out quickly and played well in damp conditions.
The Ladies County teams (except Sussex) stayed in local hotels which they enjoyed and each day booked lunches from a menu of hot lunches and salads for the entire team at the Club’s kitchen. Physiotherapy was provided by Charlotte Young and Ian Marsh within the Topspin shop, which stocked a wide variety of shoes, clothing and racquets and ran the restringing service.
Framework Sports were there for the Thursday and Friday demonstrating both the Tennis Slinger and the new Pickleball Slinger and kindly lent out Diadem Pickleball paddles for non-stop Pickleball on the mini tennis court and displayed a full range of Diadem Tennis racquets.
The pictures below were taken on the evening of the County Cup party, sponsored by M & A Accountants, when matches were still being played and which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the WTA by Billie Jean King at the Gloucester Hotel, London in 1973.
Guests: the entire 6 county teams and Duncan Baker MP and his wife Nina and daughter, Tim Adams leader of the North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), Liz Withington NNDC councillor for Leisure & Sport and Emma Spagnola, mayor of Cromer and our Head of Tennis Andy Margarson and Club chairman Kelvin van Hasselt. Also present were past chairs of the Club, Giles Margarson and David Groves and past volunteers at the Club Beryl & Brian Mansell and Margaret Burrows (the Club’s oldest tennis player, aged 91) and current volunteers Shelagh Mackenzie (tournaments) and Iain Mackenzie (Clubspark expert) and Tanja Wright (leader of the Gardening Team) and Jane Bentham (working non-stop throughout County Week – and during the year !) and team captains Richard Keeble and Barry Foulser. Senior Week Cromer 2023 had 172 players participating, including the annual group from Wheatly Hills Tennis Club, Doncaster. Wheatley Hills, a club with just 3 tarmac courts, won the Ladies Doubles Restricted and were finalists in several other events.
Senior Week 2023 was a relaxed week – fine weather, some wonderful tennis played, the kitchen serving delicious home-made food and plenty of drinks served from the bar !
Next year it is hoped Senior Week will not take place in the same week as Cromer Carnival so easier to get around !
Next year we will also be running evening entertainment – possibly a quiz, barbecue and for those who are not too tired, a Pickleball with Margaritas Evening – let us know what you’d like !
We look forward to welcoming Wheatley Hills Tennis Clubs and groups from other clubs to Senior Week Cromer 2024 !
